Vitamin C for Guinea Pigs: Why is it important? + Review

If you didn't know already, guinea pigs cannot produce their own vitamin C, so as the owners, if you want your piggie(s) to be healthy, then I suggest going to your local pet store and purchasing some vitamin C pills (if you haven't already.) If you don't give your guinea pigs Vitamin C, they will get vitamin C deficiency (a.k.a. Scurvy for humans.) Guinea pigs that may have vitamin C deficiency have a rough hair coat, lack of appetite, dental pain, delayed wound healing, lameness, and an inability to fend off infections. Guinea pigs with a slight vitamin C deficiency may show no visible signs of disease; however, their immune system may not be able to fight off diseases or infections.

This is the type of Vitamin C pills I buy for my pigs (they are Oxbow brand). It is about $7 - $8 at Petsmart. Now I highly recommend this for all guinea pig owners. My pigs will eat this right away, I put this in front of their face every morning (once a day) and they are fine with this. My pigs already know what every morning they are going to get this so they will immediately start biting the bars!
Now if you can't afford $7-8 every 1-2 months (depending on how many pigs you have) then save up! It really is worth the money and it will save you from a possible health issue in the future!

There are 90 vitamins in here so it will last you a while if you don't have as much pigs. It lasts Peanut and Cocoa up to about a month and a half. But if you have more than two pigs take 90 and divide it by the number of pigs you have and your answer will be how many days this will last you.
ex.) 90 vitamins ÷ 2 piggies = 45 days (:

This is what the Vitamin looks like. As you can see, on the ingredients, there are pineapple, apple fiber and cranberry fruit powder in there so that acts like a flavor which makes the guinea pig think of this as a treat. (All three of these fruits are safe for guinea pigs so do not worry! (: ) My pigs think of the sound of the bottle shaking as like a plastic bag being shaked! They know its a treat and they can eat it whole! (If your pigs do not/cannot/will not eat it whole, split it into half.)

I really love this product so even though this isn't a review, I will give this a 5 out of 5 stars! My pigs really seem to love this and you get what you pay for! Link to Oxbow Vitamin C tablets on Petsmart.com

I really prefer this over the water drops. When I got my first piggie, I bought the water drops and me and my piggie honestly did not like them! My first pig (R.I.P.) didn't drink the water as much when I had the drops in and it cost me like $10! NOT worth the money! Also the drops change the water's taste so your guinea pig may not like this taste and may not drink the water. DO NOT BUY THE VITAMIN C WATER DROPS! If I had to rate the Vitamin C drops, 1 out of 5 stars!

PLEASE consider getting your guinea pig vitamin C tablets/pills if you haven't already! It will make them healthier and it will save you from a very serious problem in the future, which leads to a big vet bill! It is very cheap to buy every one and a half months and it will be all worth it because you will have a happy, healthy pig!

Review: Oxbow Simple Rewards Strawberry Treats

Today's review will be on my guinea pigs personal favorite, the Oxbow Strawberry Treats!

There really isn't much to say about this product, other than IT IS AMAZING! On the ingredients, basically all it is, is frozen strawberries.

The reason why I love this product so much is because there is only one ingredient and obviously it is safe for guinea pigs to eat.
My pigs go CRAZY over this stuff and if they could, I'm sure they would eat this whole bag in one day!

My guinea pigs start biting the bars as soon as I open the bag! (As Cocoa very nicely demonstrated).

I would say this product deserves a 4 out of 5 stars. I would've given it all stars, but half of this product is basically air, and the other half are the strawberries. And I purchased this for like $6. I think they can at least include more strawberries, but of course you can get fresh ones as well! I really like this product except for this minor little flaw! (: So I really suggest getting this because my piggies will go CRAZY for this!

If your guinea pigs don't like strawberries, they also make a banana one, a timothy treats one and a vegetable one but you will have to check the ingredients on the vegetable treats! They are all around the same price! (:

Review: Kaytee Timothy Complete Guinea Pig Food PLUS Fruits & Veggies

So today's review will be on the Kaytee Timothy Complete Pellets Plus Fruits & Veggies

Here is what the pellets contain:

So it contains the pellets (duh!), dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, dried carrots and timothy hay. Now like I said above, I threw out the mango...Hopefully that isn't a big deal! (:
Now tell me, do you see something here that you CANNOT feed to your pigs???
YES! You guessed it, the pumpkin seed! Piggies cannot digest anything coated in a shell like sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds!
Now the down part is that this does contain many pumpkin seeds so it is going to be quite difficult to pick out all of the seeds but the carrots and the cranberries are safe for your pigs so if you don't want to pick out all the seeds in this pellet mix, then I don't recommend getting this product.

What I do is I scoop up the pellets in my pellet scoop thing, and then I pick out the seeds when they are in the scoop because you are dealing with less pellets.

Overall I would give this product a 3.5 out of 5 star. Now don't get me wrong, it is a GREAT pellet mix and my pigs go CRAZY over it but it does include a few things in this mix that guinea pigs can't eat. Although it doesn't contain that much mango, the mango was too squishy and big for my guinea pigs to swallow so I took those out. And the pumpkin seeds are a big no-no as well!

If you really don't mind the pumpkin seeds in there then I suggest that you go out and buy it! It is about $10 - $11 depending on where you buy it! Link to pellet mix on Petsmart.com (:
